The integration of biogas and renewable natural gas (RNG) into existing energy infrastructure represents a promising pathway toward sustainable energy systems. This review paper examines recent advancements in biogas upgrading technologies, grid integration strategies, and the challenges of incorporating renewable gas into traditional natural gas networks. We analyze innovative purification methods, including membrane separation and pressure swing adsorption, that enhance biomethane quality for grid injection. The paper also explores smart monitoring systems and control technologies that facilitate seamless integration while maintaining grid stability. Additionally, we review cutting-edge approaches to managing varying gas qualities and ensuring infrastructure compatibility. Our findings indicate that recent technological innovations have significantly improved the feasibility of large-scale RNG integration, with some systems achieving methane recovery rates exceeding 99% and reducing integration costs by up to 40%. However, challenges persist in standardizing gas quality parameters, optimizing upgrading processes, and developing cost-effective solutions for small-scale producers. This review underscores the potential of biogas and RNG as key components in transitioning toward renewable energy systems and identifies critical areas for future research and development.
