Background: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) are major public health challenges, often complicated by cardiovascular dysfunction known as "Cardio-Renal Syndrome". N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) is the gold standard for cardiac evaluation, but its interpretation is complex in renal patients due to reduced clearance.
Objectives: This study aimed to analyze serum levels of NT-proBNP in kidney failure patients compared to healthy individuals in Babylon Province, Iraq, to establish local diagnostic insights.
Materials and Methods: A total of 52 subjects (30 kidney failure patients and 22 healthy controls) were recruited from Al-Imam Al-Sadiq Teaching Hospital between October 2025 and February 2026. NT-proBNP levels were measured via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) protocols . Statistical analysis was performed using Independent Sample T-tests (SPSS v.20).
Results: Demographic data showed a significantly higher mean age in patients, compared to healthy controls. BMI was lower in the patient group compared to controls, suggesting catabolic wasting. Statistical analysis revealed a highly significant difference (P < 0.01) in NT-proBNP profiles between the two groups, confirming the profound impact of renal failure on this biomarker.
Conclusion: The study reinforces the role of NT-proBNP as a significant, though complex, marker for monitoring systemic homeostasis in kidney failure patients within the local Babylonian population.
